Aguaciklas - IoT based water quality system

Two Countries, One Vital Resource

It started when our team came together in Vilnius—two students from Lithuania and one from Portugal, united by the Arqus Alliance. Despite the 3,000 kilometers separating Vilnius and Braga, we quickly realized our countries share a deep connection to nature. Whether it is the lakes dotting the Lithuanian landscape or the river systems flowing through Northern Portugal, water is the lifeblood of our environments.

During our brainstorming sessions, we asked a simple question: How do we know if these waters are healthy? We realized that while professional monitoring exists, it is often expensive and infrequent. We wanted to bridge that gap.

Combining the Portuguese word for water (Água) and the Lithuanian word for cycle (Ciklas), Águaciklas was born. Our goal was to create a sustainable, accessible way to "give a voice" to our rivers and lakes. By building an IoT system that tracks clarity and temperature in real-time, we are empowering communities in both countries to see what is happening beneath the surface, ensuring that our shared waters remain preserved for future generations.

Working principle:

Transmitters installed in a water reservoirs collect water quality data, including clarity and temperature. This data is transmitted over a LoRa network to a receiver, which relays it via Wi-Fi to an online dashboard at https://aguaciklas.eu
